Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General

Topic: No Time to Die: WMUN Secretariat

The Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General is one of the most competitive Model UN committees on the collegiate circuit, and is creatively crafted to be a fun, engaging, and unique experience. The committee premise will remain confidential until the week of the conference, at which point the background guide will be distributed. This is an application-based committee. Those who request a position in the Ad Hoc when registering will be sent the application.

LAMUN Ad Hoc Content Warning

Warning: We deal with heavily nuanced and complex issues in Model UN on a regular basis, many of which could be directly related to life experiences that delegates have had.
In that vein, the Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary General at LAMUN 2023 may contain some or all of the following topics:

  • Alien Abductions

  • Drugs

  • Horror

  • Ouijia Boards

  • Crime

  • Murder

  • Apocalypses

  • Trolls

  • Egyptian Mummies

  • Spiders

(We know that this gives you information about the ad hoc, so in some sense, yeah this is a hint too. But that shouldn’t undermine the validity of the content warning:)

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

Hello and welcome to the LAMUN XVIII Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General! My name is Erin Yeh and I am honored to serve as one of your chairs this weekend.

I am a fourth-year Global Studies major and Education Studies minor from Manhattan Beach, California. Outside of MUN, I’m probably drinking a lot of caffeine, procrastinating my thesis, managing events for the UCLA Center of Southeast Asian Studies, or writing and editing for the Politics and Activism section for META MAG, a fashion editorial.

I joined MUN at UCLA in my freshman year and have since served on the staff and Secretariat for our high school and collegiate conferences and competed on our travel team. Last year, I served as the USG for GAs and Specs at LAMUN and as a Head Delegate for our travel team. Currently, I’m the President of Model United Nations at UCLA and a Head Delegate alongside Jakob and Atharva. Needless to say, I have been doing this for a long time and am anxiously (and somewhat sadly) awaiting this enticing end to my, and many of your, Model UN careers.

As we reach the end of the 2022-2023 travel season, I hope LAMUN XVIII, whether it be your first, last, or somewhere in between, will be one to remember.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or say hi the next time you see me on the circuit. We’ll see you very soon in Los Angeles!

Best of luck,

Erin Yeh

Chair Letter

Hello y’all,

Welcome to LAMUN XVIII, I am Jakob Franco and I will be serving as one of the chairs for the Ad Hoc Committee. I am a 4th year student majoring in International Development Studies and minoring in Linguistics. Outside of MUN, I am interested in environmental protection and hope to pursue a law degree after graduating from UCLA.

I have participated in Model UN since my first quarter at UCLA and have served almost every role imaginable. The club has provided me with numerous opportunities to grow professionally and competitively but more importantly many friendships that I will cherish long after I’ve forgotten how to manage order of disruption.  I am very excited to work with two such friends as fellow senior staffers and send off my time in MUN with this committee.

We’ve worked hard to make this year’s Ad Hoc unlike any other committee any of us have competed in on the circuit. I hope you’ll find it challenging but rewarding and can’t wait to show you what we have in store for the weekend! If you have any questions before then, feel free to reach out and ask.

Sincerely,

Jakob Franco

CD Letter

Howdy folks!

My name is Atharva Kulkarni and I am ecstatic to be the Crisis Director for the Ad Hoc at LAMUN XVIII. I’ve been doing Model UN for too long now and it’s given me friends and memories to cherish, as well as a creative outlet for my otherwise uninteresting life.

I’m a senior studying physics and community engagement from Calgary, Canada. If I’m not doing MUN, you’ll find me wrangling random equipment at a particle accelerator on campus, making everyone I know watch The Bad Guys, or monologuing philosophically to some of the folks in MUN.

I have always loved Model UN and have been doing it since I was in high school, CDing multiple times back then and now have some experience doing the same in college. While at MUN at UCLA, I served as a Crisis Director for BruinMUN and LAMUN—you might remember me from last year’s time-loop furry melodrama Ad-Hoc. This year, I am the Director of Training for our club, Head Del’ing with those two chairing this committee.

The Ad Hoc at LAMUN XVIII will be similarly exciting and challenge you to think creatively. My hope is that you all have a great time over the course of this weekend.

Take care,

Atharva Kulkarni
